Although making the switch to natural gas could help us reduce emissions, the way we extract, transport and store natural gas can also cause unintentional methane leaks. Methane is the second most prevalent greenhouse gas, and it can actually have more harmful effects on the environment than carbon.
What can be done about methane leaks?
Although leaking methane can have many harmful environmental consequences, if we found a way to harness that methane, we could use it for fuel. According to the White House, by stopping the leaks and harnessing the methane for fuel, we could save approximately 180 billion cubic feet of natural gas by the year 2025. That is enough fuel to heat upwards of 2 million homes for an entire year. Methane is often leaked because of shoddy equipment and lax standards, and both of which could easily be addressed. Harnessing methane not only makes sense for the environment, it makes sense for the economy as well.
